Thomas started with Newcastle Swifts and joined Second Division Burslem Port Vale in June
1903 and in three seasons there managed only eleven League games in which he scored one goal
and one F.A. Cup tie in which he failed to score. This was to be his lot throughout his
playing career that of mainly a Reserve team player. In 1906 he joined First Division
Everton but left without play a first team game. He had more luck at Second Division Leeds
City, who he joined in 1906. He did not get a game in his first season at Elland Road but
finished up scoring twice in nine League games and failed to score in one F.A. Cup tie. He
had an extended run while John Lavery was injured and his goals both came on his debut in a
3-4 defeat by Chesterfield at Saltergate. In May 1908 he moved to his next club Second
Division Barnsley, and played three League games without scoring before leaving for
Non-League Huddersfield Town where he finished his career.
