Roberts started his football career with Southport Central in the 1908-09 season. He
joined Second Division Leeds City in May 1909, and soon established himself as City’s
regular Outside Right. He was a fast and elusive Winger and often showed fancy footwork, and
was adept at providing chances for others but scored some vital goals also. He scored
thirteen goals in one hundred and eight League games and two goals in five F.A. Cup ties
during his four year stay at Elland Road. He left for Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1913
and then, in June 1914, he joined Luton Town along with former City Reserve Full Back, John
Dunn. He and his two brothers were on the City books at the same time in 1910-11, but
neither played for City in the Football League, although Dickie did make one wartime
appearance.
