Murray started with Forres Mechanics and then Inverness Thistle, before joining First Division Sunderland in June 1901. He scored three times in just eight games as he played seven of the last eight games of their 1901-02 First Division championship campaign. He succeeded so well that he was picked for the Scots in the 1902 trial game against the Anglo Scots. He scored for Sunderland on his League debut against Grimsby Town in a 3-1 win when he played alongside Jimmy Gemmell, who also later joined Leeds City. He was a mazy dribbling winger, but did not fulfil his early promise and dropped into the Southern League with Northampton Town in 1903. He spent one year there before joining Southern League Tottenham Hotspur in May 1904. He had two seasons at White Hart Lane before moving to Leeds City in May 1906. After just eight games at Elland Road, he retired in 1907.
