Leeds United Reserves Statistics: Teamsheet Details:

This statistics section is designed to give an indepth look into the full match details of Leeds United Reserves. It gives full match details of all Competitions recognised by the Football League, European and Wartime fixtures and details of the Leeds teams which took part in those games.

I would like to thank Paul Gregson for his excellent graphics and WAFLL and Bernard Langstaff for their assistance in the project.

I would also like to make special mention to Mark Ledgard, Neil Roche and Alan Hepworth. Mark and Neil, together with Bernard have been a fountain of information for match reports and team and match details, while Alan has contributed much in the checking of the detail, which was essential to the finished product.

The project is a work-in-progress and not yet complete, however, if anyone has any contributions, requests, suggestions or corrections please contact me on HistoryofLeedsUnited@hotmail.com

Substitutes - General Evolution:

English Competitions:

Substitutions during matches in the English Football League were first permitted in the 1965-66 season. During the first two seasons after the law was introduced, each side was permitted only one substitution during a game. Moreover the substitute could only replace an injured player. From the 1967-68 season, this rule was relaxed to allow substitutions for tactical reasons.

In 1985-86 the Full Members Cup permitted two substitutes, and this was followed by the F.A. Cup and League Cup competitions in the following season of 1986-87

It was not until 1987-88 that two substitutes were allowed in League games.

In 1992-93 three substitutes were allowed in League games while games in the F.A. Cup and League Cup remained at two.

In later years, the number of substitutes permitted in Football League matches gradually increased; but different competitions varied, with the Charity Shield game allowing a choice from five.

From 1993-94 to 1995-96 all League and Cup matches allowed three substitutes.

In 1996-97 the EPL increased the substitutes to any three from a bench of five, but the Cup competitions remained with a bench of three.

In 1997-98 the F.A Cup followed the League's position and the League Cup followed in the following season of 1998-99 to restore a common rule.

This remained the same until 2008-09, when the F.A. Cup and the League Cup both increased the bench to seven. The League followed suit in 2009-10, but the Football League Trophy, then known as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, still restricted the bench to five.

The 2010-11 season saw the League and the F.A. and League Cups remain with a choice from seven on the bench, but in 2011-12 the League reverted to five, while the F.A and League Cups remained at seven.

The 2012-13 season saw League games increased to choice from seven players on the bench, which meant that all competitions where uniform with any three from seven players allowed.

European Competitions:

1967-68 Substitutes, other than goalkeepers, first allowed in European Club Fixtures. Three were allowed.

In 1968-69 this was increased to any three substitutes from a bench of four, from 1st January 1969. This was increased to a bench of five from 1st January 1970 in 1969-70 and remained that way until 1998-99 when the bench was increased to seven.

There have also been restrictions placed on the number of foreigners allowed in European games.
